How
did you get in to making costumes?
I have always dressed up as long as I can remember. I
started to make costumes for myself for Halloween when
I was about 16. But with making them for events that
wasn't Halloween, that started for me around 2005. I'm
a complete geek and I started to go to Conventions
(San Diego Comic Con) in 2000. And I was so jealous
and taken back by all the cool people that were
dressed up, so I decided join them on my trip in 2005.
I made a Jedi design that wasn't the traditional look.
I think it's cool that I still talk to people and they
say they remember me in that outfit ^_^.
What are some upcoming cons where we should we look
for you?
Well I'm hopefully going to one here in my hometown of
Phoenix in May. And judging with my new life/school
situation I'll be at this years San Diego Comic Con.
It would really suck if I have to break tradition.
Other then that, honestly I never have the time or the
money to go to the cons on the East Coast. Though it
always seems like they a ton over there!
Upcoming projects?
For costumes? Well I'm planning on remaking my Jessica
Rabbit outfit. I don't think a lot of people know I
made that one in a day to go to a party. So I'm not
the happiest with it for cons. And I just got a new
wig for her so I really want to do that. I want to
make a Saya outfit from the anime Blood+. And I'm
going to try to make a group for that. After many
suggestions, I am planning on making A Bride costume
from Kill Bill. And since I haven't dipped in American
Comics, I might try Power Girl out for size. Other
then that, I haven't really thought of anything I have
the money for. Maybe a Blood Elf Warlock from WOW,
like my character, that might be fun! ^.^
How old were you when you learned to sew?
I think I'm still learning!! LOL! But I think 15 or
16, I honestly can't remember. All I know is a ton of
my stuff is done by hand so I'm no master by any
means.
What are your favorite Fabrics to use?
A ton of my Padme costumes are made of upholstery
fabrics. Which I like because you get great texture
from it. Even though it doesn't breath, so that's a
pain at a crowded hot con. But I love all kinds of
fabrics. I honestly choose fabrics and then choose
what project I'm going to do from them. That's how I
started making Padme outfits, I found a fabric that
reminded me of a gown of hers, and the rest of it is
history!! So I think I work backwards!!
Do you have any helpful tips that you can offer the
rest of us?
Goodness, this is a hard question, because I think
every costumer is different. That's what makes
everyone so special in my eyes. I do think fabric is
the key! I think it can make or break the costume. And
if your going to make a costume and wear it to a con,
go all the way, or don't do it at all. Take time and
love into it and people will see that. Even if it
isn't perfect. Mine are not close to the real thing by
any means, but I put time into it. And I think that is
good enough for me.
Favorite Costume?
Hmmm..That's a really hard question, so I'm going to
break it down. For my Padme ones, I'm really happy how
my latest Purple gown came out, but I hate the head
piece. So I guess my Peacock gown is my favorite
complete Padme. I was surprised how I looked in my
Jessica Rabbit outfit. I feel beautiful in my Corpse
Bride outfit. I feel comfortable in my Kimono. And I
feel like I can kick ass in my Saya outfit. So I guess
I didn't answer that question right, sorry. LOL!
Favorite Convention?
San Diego Comic Con!!! It's my heaven! I'm not happier
and more at home until I'm there. Though even if I
didn't like the last Celebration, I got to finally
meet so many amazing costumers. And became friends
with so many amazing people, I did like that one.
Do you have a particular inspiration for costuming?
Well the only person that really inspires me is Trisha
Biggar. She is the mastermind behind the costumes of
the latest Star Wars films. No one inspires me more.
What do you plan to do with costuming in the future?
I was accepted to the Fashion Institute of Design and
Merchandising (FIDM) in LA for costume design for TV
and Film. So I plan on making a living being part of a
design team in the production of costumes for films.
Or I would be happy being a fabrics buyer for a team,
and travel all around the world to find fabrics. And
my big dream is to be the head costume designer for an
epic film and win an Oscar for it. I know its a big
dream, but there is nothing wrong with that!!
What is your favorite memory of costuming?
There are so many! I thought it was so cool that I was
in the Star Wars magazine with my friend Randi for my
Green Robe Padme outfit. I love it when little girls
come up to me to take a picture, they think I'm really
Padme, it's cute. Also when costumers that I admire
come up to me, and want to see my costume in real life
and that they like them. That's an honor. Plus I hope
there are many more to come!!
